America by Bicycle is proud to announce a new ride! We've planned 12 days
in one of the best cycling areas east of the Mississippi...The Shenandoah Valley and 120 miles
of The Blue Ridge Parkway.
The ride will start and end in Charlottesville, VA which will make start and end logistics much easier. We've
tailored this ride to stay in interesting areas and allowed for time to see the many sites during your
non-riding time. Additionally, the itinerary is designed so that every day is not a bag drag and a
point-to-point ride. You'll stay 2 nights in Harrisonburg and Staunton and 3 nights in historic Lexington VA.
Loop rides will be offered on the extra days in those areas. You can ride, sightsee, or just rest if you feel
like you just don't want to ride that day. Daily mileage is moderate averaging 58 miles with multi-mileage
options offered on most days.
There's a lot to see and do both while you are riding and after you finish for the day. You'll be able to
visit the historic Frontier Culture Museum, the Woodrow Wilson Library and Museum, the
Statler Brother's Museum, or just take a guided tour in Staunton; visit the Virginia Military
Institute and Museum, the Stonewall Jackson House, the George C. Marshall Library and Museum,
and the Museum of Military Memorabilia in Lexington; visit one of the many wineries in Rockbridge
County; and many other attractions in Waynesboro, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and Roanoke VA. When
on your bike, you'll ride quiet rural roads in the Shenandoah Valley and then climb to the
Blue Ridge Parkway for some of the most beautiful vistas the country has to offer. You'll ride
by the famous Shenandoah Caverns, Virginia's Natural Chimneys, and stay at one of the 7
Wonders of the Modern World...Natural Bridge.
We elected to keep the mileage on the moderate side to allow for it being early in the season, because of the
hilly terrain, and to allow time to see the sights both on and off the bike. Don't let the short mileage
mislead you into thinking youll only be on the bike 3 hours a day...the riding in this area is hilly to say
the least. You'll climb over 40,000 feet in 12 days...but boy what descents! Youll have 40,000 feet of
those too! In spite of the climbing, every time you top a ridge, the views and the impending descent will
appease the legs.
Seven out of the 12 nights, you'll be staying within easy walking distance of the action. In Staunton, you'll
stay right downtown in the Stonewall Jackson Convention Center and in Lexington you'll stay in one of
the top Hampton Inns in the inventory...again within easy walking distance from the historic downtown area.
The remaining motels are all in the upper scale of motels we select for our rides.
We are excited about this rideand the format. Come join us for a great time, a great ride, in a super area.
Hope to see you in the Spring of '09. Sign up early as space is limited.
